From the Chair:

PSC web site: http://www.psc.ctsserver.com

As we come to the end of another paddling year, it is time to think about the Fall Dinner and even to start planning for the next year. This year we will meet on Sunday, November 4, at the Alpine Haus at 11141 W. Roosevelt Road, Westchester, IL. Alpine Haus is at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Wolf Road, just east of the N/S Tollway (I-294). Because there is lots of construction around there, as we get close to the dinner check the PSC website or call the Alpine Haus (708-409-8640) to find out the best exits off I-294 and I-290.   (Late Flash:   Alpine Haus tells us all exits to the restaurant are open. No special routing is needed!)   Dinner this year will be $19.75 for adults, $5 (PSC subsidized) for children 12 and under. Cocktails start at 5:15 PM and dinner at 6:00 PM.

Click here for a form to register for the dinner.
There are five positions whose terms expire this year (four board members and secretary). Please contact incoming Chair Vic Hurtowy (847-803-4575) if you are interested in serving on the board or as secretary. Holding office is a chance to help the club and get to know a wider range of members. We especially encourage younger members to serve. Typically the board meets after the fall dinner, before the trip leaders' meeting, and one other time to set policy and discuss matters of importance to the club. Board members also are expected to help with a limited number of other tasks, for example, Paddling in the Park.

Contest!
For entertainment at this year's dinner, we've decided to give club members a chance to share some of the stories we tell around campfires in the evening after a day on the river. We're holding a competition for the worst canoeing experience-non-fiction only. Think about the bad trips you've had, choose the one that stands out most in your mind, and write a short one page account. Whether or not you want to use actual names is up to you. Send me your stories by October 1 (150 N Lombard, Oak Park, IL 60302). The board will select the best three stories, which will be read at the dinner. The winning stories will be published in subsequent newsletter as space permits.

Paddling In The Park Report (Edited)
Once gain, this year's PIP was a great success, thanks to all of you who made it happen. More than 1650 people - many of them youngsters - found out about the fun of being in a canoe or kayak, voyageur canoe or dragon boat, or tried their hand at sailing or challenged themselves in a marathon canoe.

On behalf of PIP, special thanks to PSC, CWA and CASKA for their financial contribution which generously paid for the lunches both days for the many volunteers, instructors, vendor staff and organization participants. We couldn't do it without you! Thank you.
