From the Chair:

PSC web site: http://www.psc.ctsserver.com

It's been a good paddling year to date with many more great trips to go. I have enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new paddlers and plan to do more of both for the remainder of this paddling year. There are some Club issues to attend to, however. First, we need nominees for Board and co-chair. Don't by shy – self –nominations by interested members are welcome. Please contact either Vic Hurtowy or myself with your suggestions or to express interest. Second, it is not too early to begin thinking about be coming a new trip leader for 2002. We will meet in early January to develop the 2002 trip calendar so think about rivers that are your favorites, talk to existing trip leaders, and take the leap.

See you on the river.

Bill

Christina Taylor Peace4368@aol.com 708-445-0871

Trip #66 Sat Aug 11
Kankakee R. IL Beginner
Lawrence Forgala 708-425-0733
Momence to Aroma Park. The current is usually fast enough to make this a somewhat quick trip. Lunch will be at the take-out or, for those who wish, at the GladFest in Momence. Take I57 S to Rt17 East. Go E on Rt 17 until just before the Ford dealership outside Momence. Turn left onto River South Road and continue approx 1/2 mile to the put-in. Carshift at 9:30.

Trip #66a Aug 11
Dowagiac R MI Beginner
Bill Barclay/Peg Strobel 708-386-1371
Mike & Anita Budrys 847-735-0810
Come join us for a pleasant paddle on a clear southeastern MI stream--and a chance to visit Lemon Creek Winery in the late afternoon. We are designating this a Mentoring Trip. We especially invite paddlers interested in giving or getting advice on how to improve their skills – since the Dowagiac is a beginner river, this is an opportunity to practice more difficult maneuvers in a low risk environment. However, if you just want to paddle, come anyway! Scattered dead fall and a steady current will require some maneuvering skills. Take I-94 east into MI to exit 4A. Take US12 east 22 miles to Business 12/Niles turnoff. Take Business 12 north into and through Niles to junction with M51 just past St. Joseph River bridge. Take M51 north (left) to intersection with M62 (in Dowagiac); turn left at stoplight and take M62 west 2+ miles to third Dowagiac crossing. 115 miles from Chicago loop. Car shift at 10:00 Chicago time, prompt.

Trip #67 Tues Aug 14
Lower Fox R. IL Beginner
Joan Taylor TaylorJRS@AOL.com 630-495-1565
Tom Richardson
This is especially for kids and their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and others. Put in will be at 10 a.m. at Route 52 and the river. We will paddle to Ayers Landing where there is a $3. fee for taking out. Lunch will be at a great place for wading and water play. As always PFD's are required and dump clothes recommended. Bring lunch and sun screen. A hat is a good protection. Please let us know you are coming.

Trip #63 Date Change from Aug 4 to Sat Aug 18
Kankakee R IN Beginner Dave & S Johnson canoesew@uti.com 815-634-2811
Join us for one or both days on this local river. (See Kankakee River trip below for Aug 19.) Camping is available at Kankakee River State Park if you are interested in making it a whole weekend away. We will paddle from the IN/IL state line to Momence. This is a really nice trip especially for late summer and it is close to home. The view at the put-in is rather amazing. When you look upstream you see the Kankakee River Ditch in Indiana that was engineered by the US Army Corps of Engineers. When you look downstream, you see the natural curves and shoreline to the untouched portion in Illinois. The stretch has some cottages on it but is quiet. It is part of the proposed Grand Kankakee Marsh. The put-in is at the intersection of State Line Road and the River at the North side. You may access State Line Road from IL RT 17. Go south of RT 17 to the closed bridge at the river. Carshift at 9:30am. Please call/e-mail for more details and/or if you plan to attend

Trip #74e Labor Day Weekend (Sat-Mon, Sept 1-3)
The Namekagon River, WI,   Advanced Beginner/River Camping
Dave and Sherri Johnson, 815-634-2811 canoesew@uti.com
This river is part of the St Croix National Scenic Riverway. We will paddle from the County K landing below the Trego Dam to Riverside landing of the St Croix River. We will be river camping at campsites that are maintained by the National Park Service. The sites have pit toilets, fire rings and drinking water. We will paddle 34.5 miles in the three days. This may seem like a lot, but we paddled the first 10 miles in two hours on this trip in previous years. The Namekagon flows an average of 3 miles per hour in this stretch. The river is rated as Advanced Beginner as it has lots of ripples and things to negotiate but isn't considered to be technical. We will do about 14 miles on Saturday, 12-17 miles on Sunday, and 4.5-7.5 miles on Monday. This shouldn't be too taxing and should allow us all to be setting up camp in mid-afternoon Saturday and Sunday and to be on the road heading home around noon on Monday. The drive to the Trego, WI area requires approximately 4 hours from Madison, WI. If you would like to participate in a community/shared dinner on Saturday night, please let me know. Please call/e-mail for more details and/or if you plan to attend.
